Yeah, that ability can be quite handy. As for that ability called 'Guard'... pretty useless in KH2, if you ask me, since successfully blocking an attack prevents you from counter-attacking. It might just be me sucking at the game, but I don't think I'm that bad.

As for all the talk about cards. Is it just me or do they never give a good enough explanation as to the how and why? Or did I just blatantly skip that now?

Which brings up the question in my first comment...

Why Cards?

In KH2 I used Guard about... 4 times ever >_>

As for why cards, no one has a damn clue.

It would be "understandable" if they tried to make a collectible card game out of the franchise, but as it is, it seems like the futile attempt to create an "innovative" battle system (like what they did with the annoying mana recharge when you've used all of it in the other games). Or they tried to benefit from the Megaman Battle Network games. I mean, it plays out completely different, but the concept seems kinda similar to me.

I never had trouble with the battle system. I just loaded up with all my most powerful physical attacks and some healing and mashed A until I ran out of cards.

That's pretty much the only strategy you need for the entire game. With enough attack cards, you should never need to increase your HP since you'll rarely take a hit, and if you do by the time it's enough to OHKO you, you have an Auto-Life ability available anyway.

That's the Kingdom Hearts series for you. Hm, now I remember a certain diagram Kung-Fu Jesus made for his KH2 LP. It basically boiled down to "Press X". But that's what's fun about the game.

Funny, but so very true... especially for KH2. For the first, a little strategy helped a bit but for II? Button-mashing is all that's needed... aside from the FM+ exclusive fights, where button-mashing and quick access to Curaga is all that's needed.

So true, essentially this game relies on you not getting a sudden case of carpal tunnel, and if you do, then you've got four other fingers to press that button with.

Magic is far less useless in KH2 than people seem to think. Magnega and Thundaga are both extremely powerful, and can kill things faster than even Final Form most of the time; Final/Wisdom/Master using Thundaga or Magnega basically clear anything in the game. It's a lot better than it was in KH1, and it's actually a viable gameplay method.

I don't think the point is that magic is useless, I think the point is that 95% of the game can be dealt with by mashing X.

The other 5% is actually having to press a directional button.

Honestly, the only time I use Magnega is while abusing the easiest quick level up technique... and I only do that to perfect file the game.

The other 5% are actually used for pressing triangle. But true, as soon as you get certain abilities you don't need to move in fights for the most part since you fling yourself from enemy to enemy by pressing X.

And yeah, magic isn't useless, but it's inconvenient to use since you have to aim for the most part. Magnega and Thundaga you get so late in the game that they don't really matter all that much any more.
These spells might have a meaning for the Gummi ship (even though they're not really spells there anymore, I don't think) but not for SORA, DONALD, GOOFY!

Reflect(ga) makes quite a few of the late-game bosses very easy in KHII. I only used Magnega and Thundaga during the Colisseum battles.

Actually, I rarely push X in this game. I usually just stack the cards.

I only used it in one fight ever (a certain Sniper character), and even then it was only on my first playthrough on Proud Mode (which was my first playthrough). Magic is useful, but not necessary - even on a Low Level challenge, you just need to mash X and T a bit more.

You never need it, but it makes the (I think) third to last boss stupidly easy. You don't get hurt at all, and Reflectga does great damage. It's a waste of time against regular enemies, though, since it's faster to just mash X.

Spoiler:
Although it's probably the best against Sephiroth, he's not even hard.

Actually, I found it pretty useful against regular enemies because of its huge splash damage.
